A Few Thoughts On Love

What is love?
Love is not just a feeling, but a promise, choice, and a commitment.

Why is love so important?
Love is how we show affection for one another. It is wired into our brain and is an emotion so it's a feeling. But it's also a promise to that person to always be a constant companion even when things get rough. It's also a choice because we make a choice to love that person no matter what, even when we might be angry or upset with them or we may not like the at the moment; we make the choice to forgive and forget and move on with them. Love is also a commitment. Love is forever. When you say you love someone, you are stuck with the and will always feel (or make a choice) to love them all the time. In this generation, that is sadly not the case. Teenagers will tell each other they love the other without thinking about what they are saying and not know what it means.

How to you obtain love?
You choose to stick by that person for as long as you both live.

What does the Bible say about love?
3If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
1 Corinthians 13:3-8

What 1 Corinthians 13:3-8 means to me:
Verse 3 means (to me) that without love you can't do anything. Love of something or someone motivates us to do everything we do.
Verse 4 is when we love someone/something we have to have patience, without patience we would be impatient and rude. We also need to be kind. If we are kind, the other person is more likely to listen to us than if we weren't. It does not envy. Loving someone means we can't envy anything about the other in any way. Love does not boast. This basically means be humble. It's not that hard. Love is not conceited. It doesn't think you're better than the other.
Verse 5. Love does not act improperly. This means keep the relationship slow and steady. Don't do anything that you wouldn't do in front of others. Don't be overly flirtatious until the right time. Love is not selfish. This means don't keep the other person all to yourself. Don't be clingy but don't be distant. You have to find the right balance. Love is not provoked. Don't let the little things make you mad. Talk it out and don't keep it all built up inside. Love does not keep a record of wrongs. Don't think about everything the other one did wrong.  Forgive and forget...don't dwell on it.
Verse 6. Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. Don't rejoice in anything, wiser people wouldn't. Rejoice in what's good and true.
Verse 7. It always protects. Love will always defend what it finds is important. Love always trusts. In order to have a good relationship there has to be trust on both sides. You have to be able to trust the other person. Love always hopes. This means that it will always believe the best and never think the worst about the other person.
Verse 8. Love never fails. Love never fades if it's true. Everything else in the world will pass away and eventually not be true anymore but if you truly love someone or something you will do everything in your power to keep on loving them and never let that stop. No matter what happens.

This passage applies to many areas in our lives. To friends, to family, to relationships, to anything you deem worth loving. Just always remember that if we truly love something or someone never to let it fade because love is a choice, promise, and a commitment. Most of what I wrote has to do with a people in relationships but they can be applied to any area in our lives. :)
